AN INDIVIDUALIZED APPROACH

Music lessons
that meet you
where you are.

Learning an instrument is about more than playing the right notes.

It's about developing confidence, exploring creativity, building skills, and discovering what music can become in your life.

Some students want to play their favorite songs. Others want to develop strong musical foundations, prepare for ensemble participation, or advance their technique.

Students may also benefit from a more flexible instructional approach that accommodates different ways of learning, communicating, or engaging with music.

The goal isn't to make every student learn the same way. It's to help each student discover how they learn best.

Lessons balance technique, musicianship, creativity, and the student's own interests and goals.

ADAPTED MUSIC LESSONS

Different ways
of learning.
Equal possibilities.

Music education should be responsive to the person learning.

Adapted music lessons are available for students who may benefit from individualized instructional strategies, accommodations, or a different pace of learning.

Drawing on my background as a board-certified music therapist, I can adapt teaching methods to support a wider range of learning and participation needs.

The goal remains music education: helping each student engage meaningfully with an instrument and develop musical skills.

Adaptations may include

  • Flexible pacing and lesson structure
  • Modified notation or visual supports
  • Alternative ways to demonstrate learning
  • Simplified or sequential skill development
  • Sensory and attention-related accommodations
  • Individualized musical goals and repertoire
  • Adaptations for physical or motor needs

Adapted lessons may be appropriate for neurodivergent students, individuals with disabilities, or students who simply learn more effectively through a personalized approach.

Adapted music lessons are educational services and are distinct from clinical music therapy. If therapeutic goals are the primary focus, we can discuss whether music therapy is more appropriate.

Musicianship.
Clinical experience.
Individual attention.

An approach to teaching informed by both music and an understanding of how people learn.

I'm Dean Quick, a board-certified music therapist and Fellow of the Association for Music & Imagery.

My work in music therapy has strengthened my belief that music is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Each person brings different strengths, interests, and ways of engaging with music.

Dean Quick, MT-BC, FAMI BOARD-CERTIFIED MUSIC THERAPIST · FELLOW OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR MUSIC & IMAGERY

In lessons, I focus on building meaningful musical skills while maintaining room for curiosity, creativity, and individuality.

Whether we're developing drum set independence, working through guitar chords, exploring the piano, or adapting instruction to fit a student's learning needs, the focus is on helping each student make progress in a supportive environment.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few things
worth knowing.

What ages do you teach?

Lessons are available for students ages eight and older, including adults. Instruction is adapted to the student's experience and goals.

What instruments can I study?

Drum set, percussion, marching percussion, guitar, and piano. Drum set and percussion instruction is available from beginner through advanced levels. Guitar and piano are offered at beginner and intermediate levels.

What are adapted music lessons?

Adapted lessons use individualized teaching strategies and accommodations to make instrument instruction more accessible. These may include changes to pacing, notation, physical setup, communication, or lesson structure.

Adapted lessons are music education, not clinical music therapy.

Do students need their own instrument?

Students generally need appropriate instrument access for practice and virtual lessons. The specific setup depends on the instrument, and we can discuss options before beginning.

Are lessons virtual or in person?

Virtual lessons are the primary format. A limited number of in-person arrangements may be possible in the Charlotte and Lake Norman region, depending on scheduling and location.

Which lesson length is best?

Thirty-minute lessons are often a useful starting point for younger beginners. Forty-five minutes can provide a balance of instruction and exploration, while sixty minutes may suit older or more advanced students. Individual needs may suggest a different format.

How are adapted lessons different from music therapy?

Music lessons focus primarily on developing instrumental and musical skills. Clinical music therapy uses music within an assessed therapeutic process to address individualized clinical goals.

If you're unsure which service is appropriate, we can discuss the distinction.

How do I get started?

Send an email with the student's age, instrument of interest, general experience level, and preferred lesson format. We can then discuss availability and next steps.
